Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get referred to Get Steady?

You can refer yourself by phone or email, or you can be referred by your GP or consultant.

What happens at my first appointment?

You will be sent a link to some questionnaires to complete online.  If you have difficulties with using the internet, paper versions can be provided.  Your answers will be checked and clarified before a physical examination is carried out including balance testing and examination of your eye movement control.

A treatment plan will be agreed between you and your therapist to address the goals you wish to achieve.

How many treatment sessions will I need?

This depends on several factors: What the cause of the problem is, how long you have had it, and if whether or not you have any other problems that may complicate recovery eg issues with vision, or sensation in you legs and feet.

For example: Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) can usually be resolved in one treatment session.  Persistent Postural Perceptual Dizziness (PPPD) usually takes a minimum of 6 sessions.

How often will I need to have treatment?

In most cases you will be prescribed an exercise programme to be carried out on your own.  Your therapy sessions involve progression of these exercises to maintain the level of challenge to ensure progress is sustained.

The exception to this is BPPV, which usually needs in-person intervention, but usually very few treatments.

Where can I get more information about my condition?
